About the Image:
I’ve wanted to go to the Camargue in the South of France ever since I saw a photograph of the magnificent white horses indigenous to the area.
They are iconic images. Usually running through the surf, along the beach, or in the marshes. Every subsequent image I saw came with my inner voice saying, “I have to go photograph these horses”.
I said that to myself for years. Finally, it was my time.
We went with a local photographer who was running a group. Although there were multiple shoots over the weekend (flamingos, bull runs, landscapes), I was laser focused on our time photographing the white horses.
Our first shoot was the sparring stallions. We got up at the crack of dawn and travelled to a spot near Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. There was this sense of anticipation in the van as we neared the water. This was why everyone was there—to photograph the white horses of the Camargue. I hadn’t anticipated that we’d be photographing stallions sparring, this was an added bonus for me.
One of the gardians (think cowboy with fedora) met us with his truck and trailer. We were on a little strip of land and the stallions would be over by the edge with the water in the background. As we were all gathered and talking about our camera settings and lenses, Daniel let the horses out behind us.
I turned and ‘grabbed’ this shot as the second stallion was running over to his friend on the water’s edge.
The horses running through the surf was nothing short of magical for me. It was a perfect evening, the waves were crashing, and the light was fabulous. I’ve hundreds of images from the rest of the weekend (that are making their way into paintings), but this shot was my first of the Camargue horses and it will forever have a special place in my heart.
